Lately, I have been having so much extra free time while at work. When its not busy, we are free to read, go online, etc. I think I may start blogging more when I have the chance. Anyways, I've been thinking about how numb we can become from reading the news sometimes. I read the news online everyday and after awhile, I've realized that many of the tragic stories in the news don't leave an effect on me, I just read it as information, and almost forget these are real people facing real hard, often devastating situations.
The news story about the nursing home shooting a few days ago was one of the first things in a long time that actually left me with tears in my eyes after reading. I am not sure why, but I think my "numbness" has been broken. Rather than just reading the news in a passive way, I would like to really pray for the people or at least realize the seriousness of these situations, rather than brushing it off. I know theres not much I can do, other than really pray, and just stay informed in general.

Foot in Mouth
So last night I had an embarrasing "foot in mouth" experience. I think God has used it to humble me in many ways and also taught me to be really careful before passing judgment on anyone.
So Erik and I got back to our apartment around 6:00pm last night and we noticed that there were a ton of people entering in our building at the same time, looking like they were getting ready for a big party or something. It turned out they were all going up to the apartment right next to ours, our next door neighbors, who we've still never met. They were quite noisy, and after being pretty tired from not getting much sleep the past few days, I was sort of frustrated and just didn't have the patience to deal with loud neighbors.
I went off into the other room to read, and then Erik came in and was like, "Listen to what song they're singing." I put my ear up to the wall that is next to theirs and I could hear a group of people singing "...Our God is an awesome God, He reigns from Heaven above..."
I was really surprised... and then really ashamed. I had basically assumed that this party of people were just a random group of drunk people making a lot of noise and then complained about it. Turns out it was just a group of Christians celebrating someone's birthday and they ended up singing worship songs the rest of the night! Wow. I felt so lame.
One of these days we should really meet our neighbors and get to know them.
